Having the right fishing gear is critical to a successful fishing outing. The type of fish you wish to catch, the body of water you are fishing in, the time of year and the weather all play a key role in which fishing tackle will work best. That’s why many anglers will want to have a variety of gear at their disposal. Here is some basic fishing gear that most beginners will want to be familiar with.
Fishing Rods
Your quality of fishing rod is really important since a high quality rod will allow you to feel the fish on the line much more sensitively. An inferior rod will only lead to frustration so when starting out you should try to buy the best one you can afford. However, you don’t have to buy the most expensive one in the store right off the bat since you can always upgrade this part of your fishing tackle later!
There are different rods depending on the type of fishing you want to do so you’ll need to decide if you will be doing deep sea or ocean fishing, spin casting or fly fishing.
Fishing Lines
Fishing line comes in different weights and you want to be sure to use a weight that will hold the fish. Many times I’ve lost a big one because I had a low weight line. The advantage to a low weight line of course is that it is less visible. Go with something in the middle at first.
Fishing Lures and Flies
Of all the fishing gear available the lures and flies are perhaps the most interesting. These come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes and colors and lures can be bought that perform different types of actions. You’ll want to select them according to what is naturally in or about the water during the season that you are fishing in since the fish won’t be too keen on biting at something they are not that familiar with.
Reels
Reels are another important part of your fishing tackle and come in many sizes. You want to buy one that is decent quality otherwise you will probably spend more time untangling your line than fishing. Make sure the reel is a good fit (weight wise) for the rod. There are different reels for fly fishing than for casting. The casting reels are either closed with a button that releases the line or open faced with a bail that is used to hold and release the line.
When choosing fishing gear, you don’t want to go with the cheapest models but you don’t have to buy the most expensive stuff either. At first start off with a medium grade and then when you are more serious about the sport you can invest in the more expensive fishing tackle options.
